Johanna Kinkel’s compositions include almost one hundred songs, as well as duets, quartets, and music for chorus and stage. She admired Mendelssohn and knew the works of Spohr and other German composers of that period. There is, however, little to show that she was influenced by the two great masters of the 19th century German Lied - Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann. Her songs, some based on her own poetry, are often strophic, accessible and full of emotional sentiment. Some of the here by Felicitas Bergmann and Véronique Pélisséro recorded songs have the character of a folksong (Wiegenlied, Provençalisches Lied), or have a subtle humor (die Mandoline). Others (Du nahst!, Trennung) exhibit deeply felt life experiences full of longing (Rheinfahrt) and pain. The here presented songs are first recordings.
