Federico Mompou Hermitage (1914-17) is emblematic for a contemplative personality creating really “unheard of” atmospheres, through a style seeking an extreme simplicity. The Magic Songs (1917-19) link energy and mystery in an interrogative incantation. ( Energic ) Later, the Fountain and the Bell (1942) creates its poetry through a sober sensibility. The Piece N° 6 from the 14 Chansons and Dances suggest a Catalan influence. The Fêtes lointaines (distant feasts), hieratic, or based on primitive pulsations, reveal a haughty or joyful Mompou. The Prélude N° 9 is a langourous dedication to Chopin whom Mompou admired. As for the Charmes, composed in 1920, they pour balm on our wounded feelings. The Scènes d’enfants (1919) with the famous Young girls in the garden have been played all over the world. ( Jeunes filles au jardin ) The last two pieces, from the Impressions intimes (1911-14) end with secreto, the quintessence of the intimate world of Mompou who has managed to express minimalistically the complex and eternal emotions of the music of silence.
